Velvet is no stranger to fall/winter trend reports, but for AW26, it arrives with a distinctly narrowed focus: pantsuits.
Historically, velvet has been tied to eveningwear – draped dresses, soft tailoring, or occasion pieces that lean soft and romantic. This season shifts that narrative. Instead of fluidity, designers lean into structure. Instead of eveningwear, they emphasize tailoring. And instead of variety, there’s a striking level of consistency.
Across runways, velvet is used almost exclusively in fully realized suits. The silhouettes are sharp, elongated, and intentional; jackets cut with precision, trousers clean and uninterrupted. There’s very little deviation into skirts or softer separates, which makes the repetition feel deliberate rather than incidental.
At Calvin Klein Collection and Prabal Gurung, velvet suiting reads minimal and controlled—pared back, almost austere. Dolce & Gabbana and Giorgio Armani anchor the look in tradition, leaning into classic proportions and formal styling. Meanwhile, LaQuan Smith and Adam Lippes push the material into more expressive territory, introducing color, sheen, and attitude without breaking from the core structure.
