Academic dressing returns for AW26, but it doesn’t feel nostalgic in the traditional sense. The core elements are recognizable – blazers, pleats, ties, crests, knitwear – but the way they’re styled signals a change in tone.
What was once polished and referential now reads slightly undone, almost rebellious.
Designers pull from the language of uniforms, but loosen the structure. At Thom Browne and Dries Van Noten, classic tailoring is still present, but proportions feel elongated or disrupted. Zimmermann and Emporio Armani soften the idea further, layering knits and skirts in ways that feel less rigid, more personal.
There’s also a noticeable tension between refinement and disorder. Collars are slightly askew, layers don’t align perfectly, and styling leans into a kind of studied imperfection. At Ann Demeulemeester and Zadig & Voltaire, the look moves even further from tradition – less prep school, more introspective, almost literary.
That shift towards intentional sloppiness, irreverence, and rebellion is what defines the trend.
This isn’t about recreating a uniform – it’s about reworking it to reflect a different mood. Less pristine, less polished, almost a visual protest. The structure remains, but the attitude has changed.
In terms of translation, this is one of the more accessible directions of the season. The pieces already exist in most wardrobes; the update comes through styling – loosening, layering, and allowing things to feel a bit off. Familiar, but no longer controlled.
