Resort 2027 Key Item Trend: Micro Shorts

After several seasons of long shorts, Bermudas, and knee-grazing silhouettes, Resort 2027 is making a case for an addition of the opposite extreme. Micro shorts are appearing across collections from Staud, Hermès, Prabal Gurung, Zimmermann, Alemais, Norma Kamali, Diesel, and Erdem. But this isn’t simply a return to denim cutoffs or casual short-shorts. The newest versions are polished and intentionally abbreviated, ranging from sleek hot pants and fitted tap shorts to silhouettes that border on briefs.

What makes the trend feel particularly new is the styling. Rather than building an entire look around exposed skin, designers are using micro shorts to create contrast in proportion. Tiny bottoms are paired with long coats, oversized jackets, fluid layers, button-downs, and covered-up tops, making the short length feel almost incidental to an otherwise substantial look.

At Staud, the silhouette is streamlined and sophisticated, paired with a high-neck blouse and long scarf. Hermès similarly balances its abbreviated shorts with a long cardigan and knee-high boots, while Prabal Gurung adds a sweeping coat and dramatic draping. Zimmermann and Alemais push the trend toward resort dressing, while Norma Kamali, Diesel, and Erdem embrace its sexier, more playful possibilities.

There’s also something notable about seeing micro shorts emerge alongside the continued presence of longer shorts. Fashion isn’t necessarily replacing one hemline with another; instead, the middle is disappearing. Knee-length tailored shorts remain relevant, while Resort 2027 simultaneously pushes the other end of the spectrum toward extremely abbreviated proportions.

For retailers, that makes micro shorts less of a wholesale replacement for existing shorts silhouettes and more of an emerging key item to watch. Resort 2027 suggests that after seasons of length, designers are also ready to go very, very short.
