Resort 2027 Runway Silhouette Trend: Crop Tops
Crop tops aren’t exactly new, but Resort 2027 is giving the familiar silhouette a noticeably different point of view. Rather than the basic cropped tees, bandeaus, and bra tops that defined earlier iterations of the trend, designers are incorporating the shortened proportion into more considered, polished pieces. The crop itself isn’t necessarily the statement – the exposed waist and shift in proportion are.
At Staud, a cropped cable-knit turtleneck brings midriff exposure to an otherwise covered-up look, while Norma Kamali uses knotting and draping to create an asymmetric flash of skin. Hermès strips the idea down further with a minimal leather bandeau paired with fluid black trousers.
Print and pattern give the silhouette a different character at Roberto Cavalli and Etro. Cavalli’s fitted crop plays into the house’s more overtly sensual aesthetic, while Etro pairs a decorative cropped shell with relaxed, high-waisted trousers for a softer Resort interpretation. At Alémais, even classic shirting gets shortened, turning a crisp button-down into a cropped proportion above an embellished skirt.
Across the collections, the styling is notable for what it isn’t. This doesn’t feel like a straightforward revival of the tiny Y2K crop top. Most looks balance exposed skin with substantial trousers or skirts, and the tops themselves often incorporate tailoring, knitwear, leather, print, or decorative detail. The result is a more grown-up approach to the crop top, and potentially part of a larger shift in proportion.
After several seasons dominated by oversized shapes, long layers, and deliberately relaxed silhouettes, Resort 2027 is bringing attention back toward the body. Here, the waist becomes a focal point again, with designers using a narrow strip of exposed midriff to break up otherwise polished looks.
Crop tops never disappeared completely, but Resort 2027 suggests the silhouette may be entering its next phase: less casual, more considered, and designed to be an integral part of the look rather than a styling afterthought.
